Your decision in 1993 to give front-page coverage to each murder of a child in Chicago brought welcome attention to an ongoing tragedy in our city. Obviously, it did not solve the problem, but it made us all more aware of the daily dangers and suffering of our children.
I have a suggestion for a similar kind of approach to the shootings of and by our children: Provide front-page coverage on the gun used in each violent act.
Each time a child kills or is killed with a gun, display a picture of that gun on the front page, along with the picture of the CEO of the company that manufactures that gun.
Inform your readers of the amount of money that company makes from the sales of the gun and the volume of guns manufactured each year.
Provide a graph showing the number of times that gun was used in the past by a child or against a child. Trace the path of the weapon from the factory to the hands of a child.
I, for one, am very interested to see exactly who benefits each time a child dies with a bullet in his or her head.
