With all due respect for the trials and tribulations of stars in long-running productions (“900 Nights,” Tempo, Sept. 6), it also should be noted that five families from our neighborhood went to see “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” on different occasions. All of us separately-and purposely-purchased tickets for dates when Donny Osmond would be performing.

In our case, the price for that privilege came to $272 plus change. None of us, however, ever saw Osmond perform. In fact, at the Sunday matinee our family attended, there were six additional stand-ins.

Given the frequency and degree of disappointment in our neighborhood alone, one has to wonder if the more telling story wouldn’t have been about the number of people who ended up paying $68 per ticket not to see Osmond on the many nights during the 900 scheduled when he didn’t perform.
