It shocks us that the Tribune can be naive enough to think that withdrawing government funding for the arts will liberate those who create them (Editorial, “Time to liberate America’s artists,” Sept. 11). Granted that a tiny percentage of artists are creating a genre that many would not call art.
But the vast majority of artists in this country could not survive and neither would the culture of our civilization without funds not only for the creation of new works but the education of a public who could appreciate them.
