The crime bill is now history. Now we hear from the big city mayors that they want it implemented quickly by President Clinton so that they can hire new police officers in the hopes of reducing crime by 1996.

Guess we know what the crime bill was really all about-the 1996 election. President Clinton referred to this pork-filled bill as a “down payment” soon after passage. Nice to know the American taxpayers will be footing the bill for this election “down payment.”

The media and the administration will no doubt play with the statistics to show us crime is down in 1996 even if it isn’t. After all, they have hyped crime for the last 18 months to make us all afraid to leave our homes even though the reality is that crime is not rampant.
