Officials were probing the cause of a fire that swept through a vacant former Army barracks Tuesday night at Ft. Sheridan, causing about $40,000 in damage.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters from the Ft. Sheridan, Highwood and Highland Park Fire Departments fought the blaze, which was spotted by a motorist, said Ft. Sheridan Fire Capt. Larry Wodrich.

The unoccupied barracks was near Bell Road and Leonard Wood Avenue.

Ft. Sheridan officials declined Wednesday to speculate on the cause of the blaze. A spokesman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which was assisting in the investigation Wednesday, said arson had not been ruled out.
