– Augustana 19, Adrian 7-Tommy King threw two touchdown passes Saturday to lead Augustana in Rock Island. Matt Taylor’s 1-yard TD run capped Augustana’s opening drive. The Vikings (2-0) also scored on a 29-yard pass from King to Bill Zentner near the end of the half. King threw 4 yards to Matt Engstrom in the third quarter for the final Augustana touchdown.
– Chicago 27, Concordia 7-Derrick Brooms and Dae Lee scored two touchdowns apiece to lead host Chicago. Concordia (0-2-1) opened the scoring early in the first quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Bill Bishop to John Hlavka. Chicago (3-0) tied the game late in the period on a 1-yard plunge by Lee.
– Drake 26, Aurora 0-Roy Fletcher completed 8 of 14 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown in Aurora. Drake (3-0) took a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter as Fletcher threw for 53 yards to Robert Berkley. The Bulldogs added two second-period scores on runs of 3 yards by Charlie Schimberg and 1 yard by Matt Conlan. Todd Saver recovered a fumble by Aurora (0-3) in the end zone for the only second-half score.
– Elmhurst 46, IBC 13-Derrick Walker rushed for 152 yards and one touchdown for host Elmhurst. Walker scored on a 52-yard run and William Perkins scored on plunges of 7 and 2 yards. The Bluejays (1-1) also scored on two interception returns, Guy Nardulli running 32 yards with one and Mike Pagliaro going 57 yards with the other.
– Illinois College 26, Beloit 22-Illinois College’s Brian Henry passed for three touchdowns in Jacksonville, Ill. The Blueboys (3-0), who got field goals of 34 and 43 yards from Tim Keefe, needed insurance because Jon Deveaux caught a 10-yard pass from Jeremy Warren with :01 left for Beloit (2-1). Henry was 16 of 32 for 192 yards.
– Illinois Wesleyan 33, Simpson (Iowa) 22-Kirk Liesemer caught two touchdown passes in the second half to boost Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington. Liesemer caught a 53-yard pass from Lon Erickson and a 69-yard pass from Brad Phelps to rally Wesleyan (2-0) from a 22-19 deficit.
– Knox 38, Lake Forest 21-Dave Stolarek passed for two touchdowns and scored one himself for Knox in Galesburg. Stolarek, who was 23 of 33, scored on a 1-yard plunge and threw scoring passes of 3 yards to Mike Cornthwaite and 40 yards to Sam Ledeaux for the Prairie Fire (2-1, 1-1).
Gateway Conference
– Indiana St. 12, Illinois St. 7-Tom Allison kicked four field goals for the Sycamores (2-1) in Terre Haute, Ind. Allison kicked a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter, 29- and 17-yarders in the second quarter and a 32-yarder in the fourth. David Wright led the Sycamores with 184 yards rushing on 26 carries.
– McNeese St. 34, N. Iowa 24-Chad Reeves intercepted a Northern Iowa pass and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown just before halftime to give McNeese State the momentum it needed in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Reeves scored just as time ran out in the half and McNeese State (4-0) came back to open the scoring in the second half on Chris Fontenette’s 11-yard run.
Midwest
– Ball St. 21, Ohio 14-In Muncie, Ind., Michael Blair scored two first-quarter touchdowns to lead Ball State in the Mid-American Conference. Blair rushed for 169 yards on 21 carries for the Cardinals, and Tony Nibbs added 56 yards on 15 carries. Ball State rushed for 263 yards.
– Bowling Green 30, Eastern Michigan 13-Ryan Henry passed for 228 yards and two touchdowns in Ypsilanti, Mich. Bowling Green (3-1, 2-0 Mid-American) led only 16-13 at halftime and Eastern Michigan (0-4, 0-2) drove inside the Bowling Green 20 on its first three possessions of the third quarter. But the Falcons held them each time.
– Central Mich. 45, Kent 0-Central Michigan’s Brian Pruitt rushed for 119 yards and Eric Johnson scored twice in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. Central Michigan (3-1, 2-0 Mid-American) dominated throughout, gaining 390 yards to 158 for Kent (1-2, 1-1), which last week ended the nation’s longest losing streak at 17 games.
– Kansas 72, UAB 0-Ashaundi Smith returned the second-half kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and Dorian Brew added an 81-yard punt return for a score in Lawrence, Kan. Kansas scored on a kickoff and a punt for the first time in the same game since 1966 while rolling to 28 points in the third quarter.
– Rice 28, Iowa St. 18-Byron Coston set up Josh LaRocca’s touchdown with an 87-yard run and LaRocca passed for two scores as Rice won a battle of winless teams in Ames, Iowa. Rice (1-2) won for the first time under coach Ken Hatfield and sent Iowa State to its first 0-4 start since 1987.
– Valparaiso 45, Kalamazoo 10-Nick Browder threw for 159 yards and three touchdowns and host Valparaiso gained 251 yards rushing. Brad Horman kicked a 37-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3 for Kalamazoo (1-2) in the first quarter. But the Crusaders (3-0) answered with 28 points in the second quarter and 14 points in the second half before Kalamazoo scored again.
East
– Boston 30, Villanova 15-Robert Dougherty hit Ron Stephenson with 60- and 70-yard touchdown passes as Boston University prevailed on the road in the Yankee Conference. The win extended Boston’s winning streak to 16. Villanova (2-2, 0-2) dropped its second straight game. Dougherty, who completed 21 of 32 for 309 yards, hit Stephenson with a 60-yard touchdown pass with three minutes left in the game, ensuring the win.
– Boston College 21, Pitt 9-Scott Mutryn, a freshman making his first start, passed for a touchdown and set up another in just over two minutes in the first half and Boston College’s defense did the rest in Pittsburgh. David Green’s 186 yards on 30 carries kept the ball away from Pitt (1-3, 0-1 Big East) after the Eagles (1-2, 1-1) quickly opened a 21-3 lead in their first victory under former NFL coach Dan Henning.
– Bucknell 42, Harvard 23-Rob Glus passed for five touchdowns and Rich Lemon had his seventh straight 100-yard game, both school records, as Bucknell rolled in Boston. The defeat spoiled the home debut of Tim Murphy, the 30th coach in 121 years for Harvard (1-1). Glus, who completed 14 of 17 passes for 257 yards, connected with tight end Mark Gentile on scoring tosses of 22 and 21 yards in the first quarter.
– Columbia 28, Lehigh 28-Rich Owens blocked the potential game-winning extra point with :12 remaining in Bethlehem, Pa., spoiling a dramatic bid for victory by Columbia and preserving a 28-28 tie for Lehigh. Columbia quarterback Jamie Schwalbe had drawn the Lions even by completing a 26-yard touchdown pass to Justin Fossbender on fourth down.
– Cornell 13, Fordham 6-John Wagner recovered a fumble by Fordham quarterback John Pohlman on the Cornell 1-yard line with :58 remaining, allowing the Big Red (2-0) to hold on in New York. Pohlman’s fumble came on first-and-goal from the 1-yard line for Fordham (0-4).
– Penn 13, Dartmouth 11-Andy Glockner kicked two field goals, and Pennsylvania (2-0, 1-0 in the Ivy League) stopped Dartmouth twice in the final minute in Hanover, N.H. Leading 13-9 with one minute remaining, Penn stopped Pete Oberle on fourth and 1. But on fourth down of the ensuing possession, Pennsylvania quarterback Mark DeRossa ran out the back of the end zone for a safety with six seconds remaining.
– Princeton 29, Colgate 3-Darron Webb scored on two short runs and Brock Harvey hit Marc Ross on a 27-yard touchdown pass as host Princeton scored on four of its first five second-half possessions. Two of the touchdowns were set up by Princeton’s defense, which held Colgate to just one first down in the second half, and that came in the final minute. The Tigers (1-1) forced three second-half turnovers.
– Sam Houston St. 48, Alcorn St. 23-Heisman Trophy-candidate Steve McNair completed 33 of 56 passes for 395 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as Sam Houston State defeated Alcorn State in Huntsville, Texas. McNair also rushed 10 times for 46 yards for Alcorn (2-2). Tailback Wayne Coleman scored three touchdowns and teammate Lester Leonard added two for Sam Houston (4-0).
– Temple 23, Army 20-Henry Burris completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to fullback Sidney Morse with 1:14 remaining in West Point, N.Y., giving Temple the stirring victory. Temple (2-1) forged ahead 13-0 by intermission, then watched Army (1-2) storm back to take a 20-16 lead before rallying for its first victory over the Black Knights in four meetings.
– Yale 47, Holy Cross 22-Bob Nelson ran for 117 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown, and Yale scored its most points in 71 games, in New Haven, Conn. Yale (2-0, 1-0 Ivy League), which hadn’t been as productive on offense since a 47-0 shutout against Columbia in October of 1986, outgained Holy Cross 461-379, including 258 rushing yards.
South
– Duke 27, Georgia Tech 12-Robert Baldwin rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns as undefeated Duke, off to its best start since 1988, took advantage of six turnovers in Atlanta. Baldwin, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading rusher, scored on runs of 1, 2 and 6 yards and Duke (4-0, 2-0 ACC) added Tom Cochran’s field goals of 28 and 21 yards.
– Georgia 17, Ole Miss 14-Despite having a career-high three interceptions, Eric Zeier passed for 257 yards and two touchdowns for Georgia in Athens. Zeier’s scoring passes covered four yards to Brice Hunter in the second quarter and five yards to Larry Bowie in the third as the Bulldogs lifted their record to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Southeastern Conference.
– Marshall 48, W. Va. St. 0-Todd Donnan tied a school record with five touchdown passes as in Huntington, W. Va. All of Donnan’s scoring passes, three of them to Tim Martin, came in the first half as Marshall (4-0) built a 35-0 lead. Donnan and Martin connected 10 times for 123 yards before going to the bench at halftime. Marshall tailback Chris Parker, averaging nearly 140 yards per game, had 41 on nine carries before leaving with the other starters at halftime.
– Maryland 31, Wake Forest 7-Kevin Foley threw two touchdown passes and deposed starter Scott Milanovich had one as Maryland put together its first winning streak since 1990 in College Park, Md. Maryland (2-2, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) built a 17-0 early in the second quarter, then kept Wake Forest at bay by forcing four turnovers. The Terrapins, who beat West Virginia last week, hadn’t won two straight since defeating Wake Forest and Duke in October 1990.
– S. Carolina 23, Kentucky 9-In Lexington, Steve Taneyhill connected on two touchdown passes to Monty Means, including a 52-yarder with 3:38 to go, to lead South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference. The winning drive came after Kentucky (1-3, 0-2 SEC) was penalized 15 yards for roughing punter Derwin Jeffcoat on fourth and 6 at the South Carolina 40. Three plays later, Taneyhill lofted the ball to Means racing down the left side to give South Carolina (3-1, 1-1) its decisive touchdown. Taneyhill completed 25 of 38 passes for 254 yards as South Carolina rolled up 475 yards.
– Syracuse 21, East Carolina 18-Kevin Mason scored twice in directing Syracuse’s option to three long-distance scoring drives, but the Orangemen still needed clutch defense in the closing minutes to beat East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. For Syracuse (3-1), it was a familiar scenario-struggle early, get the offense going and run away from the opponent. A 10-0 gap at the end of the opening period disappeared as drives of 55 and 80 yards built a 14-10 advantage.
– William & Mary 45, VMI 7-Troy Keen ran for three touchdowns and William & Mary rushed for 326 yards as the Tribe pounded Virginia Military Institute in Williamsburg, Va. William & Mary (4-0) won its 13th consecutive home game, tying a school record.
West
– BYU 49, New Mexico 47-Jamal Willis ran for 204 yards and two touchdowns as Brigham Young’s vaunted passing attack took a rare back seat in Provo, Utah, to give coach LaVell Edwards his 200th win. Willis scored on runs of 2 and 39 yards and Hema Heimuli had scoring runs of 4 and 7 yards to go with a 31-yard TD reception. Edwards improved to 200-74-3 in his 23rd season with BYU (3-1, 3-1 Western Athletic Conference). He is the 13th Division I-A coach to win 200 games.
– Cal 25, Ariz. St. 21- Tyrone Edwards ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns as California rallied in Berkeley, Calif., for its first win of the season. Down 21-11, Cal (1-2, 1-0 Pac-10) got within striking distance on Edwards’ 1-yard touchdown run with 7:29 remaining and went ahead on his 8-yard sweep with 2:03 remaining. James Stallworth set up Cal’s winning drive with his interception of Jake Plummer’s pass, returning it 2 yards to the Cal 40.
– Colorado St. 19, San Diego St. 17-Anthoney Hill ran for one touchdown and passed for one and unbeaten Colorado State converted two turnovers into scores late in the third quarter in Fort Collins, Colo. Colorado State (4-0 overall, 3-0 Western Athletic Conference) posted its seventh straight victory thanks to the pair of turnovers and five sacks of San Diego State quarterback Tim Gutierrez.
– Texas Tech 35, SMU 7-Zebbie Lethridge threw two touchdown passes and ran for a touchdown as Texas Tech opened Southwest Conference in Lubbock, Texas. It was the sixth straight victory for Tech (2-2, 1-0 SWC) over the Mustangs (1-3, 0-1). Lethridge, a redshirt freshman, rushed for 73 yards in his first collegiate start and completed 14 of 26 passes for 148 yards.
