Helping young children feel good about books, comfortable at the library and, most importantly, excited about coming back for more, are the goals of Preschool Story Time at the Thomas Hughes Children’s Library.

Part of the Harold Washington Library Center, the Thomas Hughes Children’s Library offers Preschool Story Time for children ages 3 to 5 several times throughout the year. A new six-week series of programs will be held at 1 p.m. on consecutive Saturdays beginning this Saturday.

The story times are approximately 30 minutes and are conducted by the children’s librarians. Each program includes a variety of activities. Depending on the stories selected, the programs may include storytelling, picture books, flannelboard stories, fingerplays, songs, puppets or movement activities.

“We want to introduce children to stories and let them know that the stories come from books in the library,” said Laura Culberg, department head. “To appeal to the children, each librarian tries to use their imagination in presenting a story.”

Although not required, reservations are suggested for the story times, which are free and open to the public. The sessions are informal, and children can come for any or all of the six programs.

The Harold Washington Library Center is at 400 S. State St., and the direct number to the Children’s Library is 312-747-4200. Similar programs are held at branch libraries, which can be contacted for specific program offerings, dates and times.
