After having read the editorial, “A primal scream against gun violence” (Sept. 15), I felt myself in the throes of uttering a primal scream in my reaction to muddle-headed journalism.
In the editorial, the author went on to a customary trouncing of the National Rifle Association and the 2nd Amendment and cited unnamed sources designed to convince the uninformed that having a gun at home was like playing Russian roulette with your family. The sources for the unnamed “studies” that were cited were not listed and rarely are.
Even more rarely, if ever, are the deterrent values of a firearm ever mentioned in the media and no statistics are compiled stating the number of crimes against persons or property that were prevented by the mere display of a firearm to an intruder.
We should be placing emphasis on firearms training for honest, law-abiding citizens and safe methods of providing firearm storage in the home.
