Residents who have volunteered for the village’s new auxiliary police program may not get a chance to serve, unless their names are on a waiting list of people to be hired as full-time officers, Police Chief Gene Kelly said.
The Village Board recently approved the program to bring in unpaid volunteers to assist regular police officers with traffic control, ordinance enforcement and clerical duties.
But recruitment initially will focus on candidates who have passed the written test to become full-time officers, Kelly said. If volunteers come from that list, he said, the department will save time and money on additional training.
