I find it necessary to write a letter to you indicating my frustration and anger after reading your article, “Nation’s clean-coal effort another victim of plane crash” (Sept. 14).
As I read the article, imagine my surprise and disbelief when I read the names of the male “technology experts” who lost their lives with the phrase “and his wife.” Three women died nameless, which is so indicative of the ongoing struggle of including women’s stories and lives in written history. The lack of personal identification at the time of such a tragedy is beyond my belief. To me, it sounds the same as “and his luggage.”
I can hear the line-“policy”- which, I say, it is time to change. For those of us who believe that women deserve the same respect and recognition as men, we are committed to point out injustice when it occurs.
This letter provides me with the opportunity to suggest inclusive language as part of your policy. It is not a fad. When all else fails, may your own eyes and ears become more sensitive to the words that serve you so well.
