If politicians want to know why people are fed up with them and government, I suggest they read Bob Greene’s column, “Science project offers real lesson” (Sept. 27). Prohibiting the picking up of 15 dead leaves in a nature center gets at the nub of the public’s disgust with governmental overregulation and bureaucratic zealousness.

This is no different than the phony protection of the spotted owl, which severely restricts logging and has thrown thousands of people out of work. It is this kind of stupidity by politicians and bureaucrats that scares us about any kind of government program-or the picking up dead leaves in the Cook County Forest Preserves.
