If there is any single symbol of hope at the already tattered edges of the new world order, it’s the handshake. Cameras record the increasingly frequent-but, often, still unbelievable-spectacle of leaders setting aside the violent animosities that have put them at each others’ throats throughout their careers. They advance slowly, grimly; for a few seconds there is the agonizing thought: Can this really be happening? Then one hand reaches out, the other grasps it. Applause breaks out. Hope has not died.
