In 1993, the State of Illinois spent $20,397 per inmate at Joliet Correctional Center, a maximum-security facility, and $16,716 at the minimum security Jacksonville Correctional Center.

By comparison, Illinois school districts spend an average of $5,326.76 per student at the state’s elementary and high schools.

Maybe we should start holding classes in cell blocks.
