The parent of a 6th grade child has raised the question of whether his son is adequately learning to spell through a new program being taught in Elementary District 62.
Parent Donald Gutzman raised his concerns at a school board meeting Monday. The program encourages youngsters to spell words like they sound rather than through the old phonics method.
He said his son was supposedly learning 1,200 new words during his elementary years. Yet the child’s spelling didn’t appear to be corrected in a fashion that taught him how to properly spell.
A more in-depth study on spelling will be presented to the board Jan. 16.
