Verna Murphy, 89, a lifelong Chicago resident, died Friday at Resurrection Medical Center. In the 1920s, Mrs. Murphy operated the Riverview Park parachute ride, which her father had built. She was a secretary with Kemper Insurance for about 25 years. During that time, she also was in the secretary pool for James Kemper, who was the U.S. ambassador to Brazil. Mrs. Murphy is survived by a son, James; a brother; a sister; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 6150 N. Cicero Ave. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thecla Catholic Church, 6725 W. Devon Ave.
