Regarding Rep. David Bonior’s recent comments: The Republican Party most certainly represents “people that clip coupons.” Coupons for 25 cents off catsup, 50 cents off corn flakes, 28 cents off toilet paper, etc. Most of the Republicans I know are middle-class married couples with children, working hard to make ends meet.
In one way, however, Rep. Bonior is correct. There is a class war brewing in this country, but it is not between the rich and the poor. It is between responsible citizens who take care of their own needs and those who believe that any citizen has the right to demand that the taxpayers take care of theirs regardless of how irresponsibly that citizen may have behaved. Sadly, this second group includes not only members of our poorest underclass, but also many members of our county’s most wealthy and highly educated elites.
