Although I agree that Martin Luther King Jr. was an important leader, I don’t think that there should be a holiday in his honor. Instead, the U.S. should have a holiday in honor of a different civil rights leader.
In my opinion, the most important action the government took to help black Americans was the abolition of slavery. Therefore, our nation should have a holiday to honor someone who was in the abolitionist movement.
Frederick Douglass worked very hard to help abolish slavery by making speeches and by editing a weekly abolitionist newspaper. Douglass deserves a holiday much more than King does.
