Despite protests from residents, the Village Council has granted the developer of a controversial apartment property a continuance for a hearing about the project.
In a 4-1 vote, commissioners agreed that discussions regarding the Highland Landmark, a 436-unit rental complex proposed for a site at Highland Avenue and 31st Street, will be continued until Jan. 30 so developer Trammell Crow can further examine an annexation agreement.
The developers had sought a continuance until Feb. 20, but commissioners refused.
But for the nearly 200 residents who packed council chambers to oppose the project, the ruling was a disappointment. Opponents charge the development will crowd schools, worsen traffic and strain village services.
