On a recent TV commercial sponsored by a health insurance company, the executive officer of the company said the United States has the best health-care program in the world.
I agree, but it also is the least affordable plan for most of our citizens. Here’s an example: Last August, my wife had common cataract surgery on one eye, and the hospital bill was $4,500 for a three-hour outpatient stay. This does not include the fee for the ophthalmologist.
To speak in the language of a doctor assessing the condition of a patient, I believe the cost of health care is past the critical stage and is headed toward intensive care.
