To the satisfaction of mothers everywhere, men are wearing hats again. We may not again see scenes of swarming, felt-topped commuters, as in photos of the Loop in the ’50s, but that’s a relief. Our ’90s men have more imagination.

The baseball cap endures into winter, worked up in wool, and increasingly seen adorned with the Nike logo, pirated or otherwise. You’ll find leather driving caps, aviator flaps and, at a certain Lincoln Park bus stop, a beanie with a propeller.

The Russian-style fur hat persists, as do stocking caps with goofy strings hanging down or towering tops a la Dr. Seuss. And in some neighborhoods, the Greek sailor’s cap is still proudly worn, a thousand miles from the nearest ocean.
