Lake County officials have tentatively agreed to contribute about $50,000 toward temporary improvements at the intersection of U.S. Highway 45 and Sand Lake Road in Lindenhurst, the site of several fatal accidents in 1993.
Overhead traffic signals and left turn lanes on the north and south approaches to the corner will be installed this fall, said Martin Buehler, director of the county’s division of transportation.
The Illinois Department of Transportation will contribute $90,000 for the temporary changes, Buehler said. He said Lindenhurst officials have agreed to consider paying for engineering costs. U.S. Highway 45 is under state jurisdiction and Sand Lake Road is a county road.
IDOT is expected to make permanent improvements to the intersection in 1997.
