Good news for beef eaters. The National Cattlemen’s Association expects lower beef prices through 1997, thanks to higher production. Cattle numbers are up 3 percent over 1994, and the average price is 6 cents per pound lower.

The association says its Beef Quality Assurance program, active in 42 leading beef-cattle states, has eliminated most hazardous residues of pesticides or animal-health products in the fed-beef supply.

It is also producing more close-trim products with 1/4 inch or less external fat.
