James N. Longson, Compton’s Encyclopedia’s executive vice president and general manager, was named the firm’s president and chief executive. Longson, who helped engineer Tribune Co.’s 1993 purchase of Compton’s, said sales of its 1995 interactive version of the encyclopedia are strong.
