When I read Stephen Chapman’s article on mandatory sentencing, I had a very strong reaction. I was appalled when I read that drug offenders spend more time in jail than those convicted of sex offenses and manslaughter. I don’t agree with mandatory sentencing, because every trial has individual factors that must be considered, but mandatory sentencing keeps these factors from being considered. Your article only strengthened my belief, and I hope it did the same for other people.
