Your article “Abuse Traps Women in Welfare” (Chicagoland, Feb. 19) brings up some troubling questions. If it is true that more than 50 percent of women on welfare are victims of physical or verbal abuse at the hands of their husbands or live-in boyfriends, what of the children in those households? It follows that more than 50 percent of them are witnesses to this abuse, if not subjected to it themselves, therefore forming another generation of abusers/abused.
I think we should give orphanages some serious consideration.
