School District 47 has joined with some residents in an effort to save a historic pump house over a well at Franklin and College Streets.

The pump house is in danger of being bulldozed if residents are unable to raise as much as $50,000 to move the structure to another site.

The pump house is a one-story brick building built in 1927 to cover the third public well sunk in the city. The pump house was designed to look like a residence.

The property on which the pump house stands was donated by the city to the school district in December so the district could build a parking lot for Hussman Elementary School.

The school board agreed to support a group of residents led by Jim Heisler.
