Anyone seeking a job or promotion in Chicago’s police or fire department should pass the required test regardless of race or ethnic background. A written test measures a person’s mental abilities to meet standards of performance on the job. Answer enough questions correctly, you pass the test and get the job or promotion. If you fail, you do not measure up. It’s as simple as that.

People of all races and creeds take written and even oral tests to become doctors, lawyers, public accountants, pharmacists, real estate brokers, etc. There are thousands of African-American and Hispanic doctors and lawyers practicing all over the country. We even take tests to qualify for a driver’s license. Is anyone given a driver’s license without a test because he or she is not white? I hope not!
