Those fortunate people who are firmly entrenched in “the system”–mainly white males–are grumbling about affirmative action. This is to be expected, I guess. But it is not to be commended.

State Sen. Walter W. Dudycz introduced a bill to eliminate affirmative action programs, saying, “I have seen people sidestepped or passed over . . . strictly because they happen to be white males.”

In the last 50 or 60 years I am sure that Mr. Dudycz realizes that the pattern has been to “pass over” male blacks, female blacks and female whites, to say nothing of many other minority groups.

This tragic pattern still exists, and in some cases is worse than it was some years ago. Isn’t it time that those who have it so good open a few doors to those who do not have it so good, and in many cases have it very, very bad?
