Through the Medicare Select program, senior Americans are the latest segment of the population to discover the benefits of managed care health plans. However, there is a possibility that this successful experimental program, now available in 15 states including Illinois, could end June 30 unless the U.S. Senate acts to extend it.
Medicare Select is a form of Medicare Supplemental or Medigap coverage designed to augment regular Medicare coverage. Unlike traditional Medigap plans, however, Medicare Select plans are managed care programs that provide quality care in an efficient manner.
More than 450,000 Medicare beneficiaries who are enrolled in Medicare Select programs are saving 10 to 37 percent in premiums as compared to traditional fee-for-service Medigap policies. Since Medicare Supplemental coverage is private insurance paid out of the pockets of senior Americans, this savings is significant. In addition, subscriber surveys have found that many Medicare Select plans have satisfaction rates that are as high or higher than traditional supplemental plans, with Medicare beneficiaries praising the coordinated approach to health care.
This success story should not be allowed to end. Instead, the Senate must join the House in expanding the Medicare Select program to all 50 states, and make the program a permanent part of the nation’s health care system.
