V-E Day at 50–it was a special day for our generation which made it come to pass, a time to remember what we did and even more to think about how we came home and contracted to build a prosperous nation for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren.

We built schools for our kids. We built homes for ourselves. The ’50s and ’60s were marvelous years for us. But then in the ’80s, we let our nation build a debt without thinking about how it would be paid.

Those of us who made V-E day come about and who were fortunate enough to benefit from the prosperity of the post-war years are the senior citizens who should take a lead role in seeing that the budget is balanced. We should stop opposing revisions in Medicare and taxes on Social Security. We should see that our grandchildren do not pay our debts.
