Police on Wednesday arrested a local man in connection with an attempted carjacking in a grocery store parking lot.
William A. Gerber, 59, of 110 Virginia St., Apt. 22, faces one count of attempted vehicular hijacking, according to Crystal Lake police. Gerber was taken to McHenry County Jail to await a bond hearing.
A Crystal Lake woman told police a man approached her as she left the Jewel Food Store at 6120 Northwest Highway shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday and demanded the keys to her late-model American sports car. The woman refused to hand over the keys and shoved the offender.
Gerber, who displayed no weapon, fled, police said. The would-be victim ran back into the grocery store, and police were called.
The woman gave investigators a description of the man who accosted her. Later Tuesday, police said they found Gerber in a downtown Crystal Lake business. Police said further investigation prompted them to arrest and charge Gerber Wednesday.
