I’m sorry to see writers criticize the use of Chief Illiniwek at the University of Illinois. Thirty years ago when my daughter attended the university, we looked forward to homecoming. And almost as important as winning was the anticipation, at halftime, of Chief Illiniwek dashing out in all his glory.
And this was no ordinary dance. Each new chief would practice a whole year, having been selected by the previous chief, and thus a tradition developed that in no way dishonored the Indian.
I sincerely hope to see the chief around for many more years.
