When Lee Daniels (R-Elmhurst) became Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives in January of this year, he declared “. . . It is time to clean up this House, and clean up the House we will do.”

Now Speaker Lee Daniels admits to the submission of fraudulent fiscal-impact statements, required by state law to accompany all legislation affecting future state budget expenditures.

So much for “cleaning up the House”! Making a bad situation even worse, the Republicans attempted to place all the blame on a young staff person for the forgeries.

Give me a break! I find it implausible that one young member of Daniels’ staff could have done this without the approval and knowledge of his superiors.

If his supervisors did not know of these forgeries, it shows Daniels and his House Republican staff to be incompetent. If they did know of the fraudulent notes, they should resign!

Either way, this incident shows Daniels is not fit to be the Speaker of the House and should be removed in 1996 or sooner.
