The world supposedly learned a message from World War II. That message was never again. Never again would the world let a group of people identified by their ethnicity, religion or political beliefs be raped, murdered and tortured as they were in Nazi Germany.
Yet genocide and ethnic cleansing happens again and again while the world stands by. It happened in Cambodia to the tune of 3 million deaths, and it’s happening again in Bosnia, with hundreds of thousands of casualties to date, and with the potential for even greater loss of life in the future.
Did the lesson we learned get lost in rhetoric or does “never again” apply only to people with particular religious or political beliefs, or might it be they have to be the right color?
“Never again” must apply to all people, everywhere. It is in our moral best interest to never tolerate genocide or ethnic cleansing. No, we can’t be policemen to the world, but we must help make sure that the world polices itself.
The ethnic cleansing must be stopped and a true message must be sent to the world that mass murder will not be tolerated. Never again!
