Lida Husik Joyride

(Caroline) (star) (star) (star) 1/2

Soft and alluring of voice, Lida Husik could be just another twee folkie masquerading as a low-fi singer-songwriter. But “Joyride” is full of evocative songs and rich sonic details that belie the record’s modest rock-trio origins. In Husik’s world, fabulist imagery reminiscent of author Gabriel Garcia Marquez merges with a profound spiritualism that is enigmatic, sometimes surprisingly optimistic and very often moving. The lyrics lend themselves to neo-psychedelic arrangements, but the heady, dream-like strumming of the guitars and layered voices never turns into mush. Instead, Husik is a canny pop craftsman; as ambiguous as her lyrics can be, her hooks are never vague, which is why songs such as “Mother Richard” and “Persinthia Lawdro and John” could easily develop into listener obsessions.
