With each new recording, composition and film score, trumpeter Terence Blanchard emerges a more self-assured and persuasive composer. The point is reiterated with Blanchard’s exquisite new recording, “Romantic Defiance,” which captures both the spontaneity of improvisation and the expressive power of composition. The tightly compressed nature of “The Premise,” the melancholy phrasings of “Unconditional” and the blues sensibility of “Betrayal of My Soul,” among others, recommend this recording. So does the meticulously voiced playing of Blanchard’s quintet, with particularly effective work from pianist Edward Simon and drummer Troy Davis.
