The U.S. Senate made an attempt last week at putting its stamp on the future by approving a bill that would, for the most part, replace government regulation of monopoly phone companies and cable television providers with free-market competition.

Proponents touted the coming of great new communications services for consumers. Detractors foresaw sharp rate increases and price gouging.

Skeptics wondered if, no matter what the price, some of the services would prove of little value to most consumers.

If so, they deserve to fail, and will.
