The June 4 editorial “Congress can’t dodge nuclear waste” highlights a principal shortcoming for nuclear energy–no one wants to be anywhere near nuclear waste, some of which remains radioactive for thousands of years.
Energy conservation and efficiency enable Japan to use half as much energy per capita as the U.S. If this course, along with renewable energy, got the same government support given to nuclear and fossil fuels, we would have a cleaner environment. Moreover, a study by the Union of Concerned Scientists shows we would also have lower energy costs that would make our industry more competitive.
