The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is helping develop a cross between an airplane and a ship to speed cargo across the Atlantic. Powered by jet engines and utilizing a hull that can ride atop waves at 50 m.p.h., the craft will be able to halve the seven-day crossing time, even in rough weather. FastShip Atlantic of Alexandria, Va., the co-developer, plans to build four such vessels at a cost of $180 million to $200 million apiece by 1998.
