I totally agree with Clarence Page’s fine column titled “Where there’s smoke/Efforts to ban the physical desecration of Old Glory should be extinguished” (Op-Ed, June 14).

I have lost much respect for Sen. Bob Dole and others, who are now embracing a proposed amendment to our Constitution to outlaw burning of the American flag.

I abhor the idea of burning our flag, but am much more against abolishment of the right to do so.

This form of expression, although unpopular and disagreeable, is guaranteed by the 1st Amendment, the true test of which is how it up-holds our right to unpopular expression. These politicians, who would pledge allegiance to our Constitution, would be involved in the first phase of its destruction.

Although well intentioned, this form of censorship may just be able to fool people into believing something noble is being done when, in fact, quite the opposite is true.

Lets keep our 1st Amendment healthy and intact. It should be jealously guarded against the slightest hint of its jeopardy.
