The front page of the June 17 Tribune contained an Associated Press photo portraying G-7 leaders and “a translator” at the Halifax summit meeting.
The person referred to as “a translator” is not a translator but an interpreter. According to the Chronicle Guidance Publications definition, a translator reads and translates written materials into another language, while an interpreter, such as the one pictured at the G-7 summit, expresses the meaning of spoken language into another language. Please advise your staff of this important distinction.
