International Business Machines Corp., which pioneered the personal computer but has seen smaller, more market-savvy competitors take the lead in the field, is creating a consumer-products division in an effort to bolster its image with home-computer buyers. The new unit, to be operational later this year, will market IBM’s personal-computer products as well as its on-line services, software, printers, set-top boxes and CD-ROM titles.
