William Pfaff’s commentary (Op-Ed, June 26) “Allies no longer view America as an example to follow” really struck a chord with me–like ho-hum, who cares, and so what’s new?

If we have learned anything from Europe, excluding Britain, it is that they are the pre-eminent ingrates of all time. Especially the French, with Paris being the capital of narcissism.

Only God knows where they would be now if America and Britain negotiated a peace treaty and left the French to the tender mercies of Hitler and the Nazis. But alas, the French have conveniently lost their selective memory–again. The only way France can stay in the headlines at all is to explode a nuclear device now and then. The only reason an American could give to visit France is to see the cemeteries filled with dead American heros, who died saving France’s butt–again.

Do they have to be grateful forever? Probably not. But maybe they should be grateful until the two generations that fought to save them are gone.
