The man who wielded the club said he was sorry for whacking Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan in the leg.
Shane Stant, 24, left prison in Salem, Ore., with a high school diploma and a new attitude.
“I’m really sorry for what I’ve done,” Stant said.
The blow stopped Kerrigan from competing for the 1994 U.S. championship, although she won a silver medal at the Lillehammer games.
Stant served 14 months for his conviction on a charge of conspiracy to commit assault. Tonya Harding, Kerrigan’s skating rival, and three others also were convicted of charges connected to the attack.
Stant said he learned a lesson in prison.
“Basically not to be selfish and to think about other people and how they feel,” he said. “It wasn’t a bad experience at all.”
