It’s not just Chicago where “you are where you live” (Editorial, July 31)–it’s a nationwide phenomenon. New Yorkers (as in those from The City) instantly categorize “Pelham” as “Pelham Parkway” and not The Bronx; but Westchesterites are quick to inquire, “North Pelham or Pelham Manor?” in a tone indicating a division far more vast than a north suburbanite’s “East Glenview or West Glenview?” A daughter in Berkeley, Calif., lives in a very different place than a resident of Berkeley Hills.

But the most amusing yet perhaps saddest example comes from natives of my hometown. I have heard call-ins to talk shows say they’re from Miller Beach, Ind. Other natives claim Hammond or Merrillville their place of origin. Few volunteer they’re from Gary!
