The laws and decisions that are making their way out of the Congress seem to me to be counterproductive, mean-spirited and shortsighted for our country and its citizens.
As I read and hear about these new proposals, I shudder to think of the consequences of dismantling our laws on protecting public lands from the cattle and timber industries that are raping our natural resources with subsidies that other citizens do not enjoy. These lands belong to all of us and should be saved for the benefit of all.
The proposals to do away with preventive, accessible health care for all can only mean more intensive care and poorer health for those not able to afford the high cost of insurance. Contagious diseases seem to be returning because vaccines for all children are not seen as necessary and cost-effective.
Education has a low priority when funding comes up, as taxpayers turn down referenda almost everywhere. Income taxes should be used for this purpose, as those who have received good educations should be willing to pay out of their ample incomes for this vital item. We will all suffer if we don’t have a more educated public. Complaints abound that workers are not skilled and motivated, but what can be expected if employees are paid minimal wages, many times with no benefits or job guarantees?
Let us think of the “greater good for the greater number” and not “just what is in it for me” and call our legislators to account for their votes.
