New classrooms will be ready for Mokena Elementary School students when classes resume later this month, District 159 Supt. Roger Reardon told the school board Wednesday.

Reardon and other administrators have begun moving into the office portion of the two-story addition, linking the Willowcrest and Mokena Elementary School buildings.

The addition contains 24 classrooms, a gymnasium and a commons area. The construction work that began last summer won’t be completely finished, however.

“The building will be functional but a lot of fine-tuning (will remain to be done),” School Board President Bruce Ebert said.

Reardon said one of the problems was that the high temperatures and humidity levels hampered the installation of the gym flooring. He said the district has had to rent special equipment to dehumidify the rooms.

The process is expected to take about a week.
