Regarding the “debate” over the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945:
My younger brother, Jim, was shot to death by a Japanese sniper at Bloody Nose Ridge on Peleliu on Sept. 27, 1944. He had volunteered to crawl out into an exposed area to try to rescue a wounded comrade. He was in the 81st Infantry (Wildcat) Division. Part of the division had been moved to Peleliu on Sept. 23 to help the Marines.
If the bomb had been dropped a year earlier, Jim would have returned to Chicago, married his girlfriend and would be a happy grandfather by now. He wasn’t as lucky as his brother.
End of “debate.”
