An employee of the Public Works Department died Saturday while checking a clogged sewer line in a manhole, police said.
Charles A. Confer, 55, entered a utility hole at Illinois Highway 171 and Maryknoll Drive at about 4:15 p.m. About 30 minutes later, a resident shouted to Confer, but received no response.
Police and fire units were called. They lifted Confer out of the manhole.
The cause of death has not been determined.
