Northwest Airlines Corp. and Continental Airlines Inc. touched off a fall fare war by cutting prices as much as 50 percent through Friday.
The discounts are good for travel in the U.S. and to some foreign destinations until mid-December. All major competing carriers matched them.
Northwest requires a 14-day advance purchase, although it will loosen that to seven days where it competes with Continental. Northwest’s promotion ends Dec. 14; Continental’s ends a day later.
